Which insert for a grave lantern? Sizes | StoneOnline

An insert that doesn’t fit the lantern prevents the cover from closing, soots up the glass or topples over in the wind. So before buying, check the interior dimensions of that specific lantern, not just its external height. Models that look alike can have completely different interiors. This guide helps you pick an insert once, and right.

Which dimensions matter?

Three interior parameters matter when matching an insert:

  1. internal height — from the base to the lowest point of the cap or cover,
  2. internal diameter or internal base — the width of the space for the insert,
  3. access — whether the insert can be comfortably put in and taken out through the opening or after removing the cap.

On StoneOnline lantern pages we list these as “Internal height”, “Internal diameter” or “Internal base”. Depending on the model, the interior is around 12,5 to 18 cm high, and its base is 7×7 or 8×8 cm, or a diameter from 7 to 10 cm. For some models we also give the dimensions of the included insert — diameter 8–9 cm and height 11,5–16,5 cm.

How to measure a lantern you already have?

Measure the interior height from the base to the lowest element above the chamber, and the narrowest point horizontally. Allow clearance for easy insertion and removal of the insert and for airflow above the flame. For flame inserts, leave clear space above the wick — the glass and cap must not overheat or soot up.

Types of inserts

  • paraffin inserts — popular and easy to find; they vary in burn time and height,
  • oil inserts — often with longer burn time; check the height of the insert including the cap,
  • LED inserts — no open flame and no soot inside; they also must fit the interior dimensions.

Exact parameters depend on the insert manufacturer. Always check burn time, dimensions and safety advice on the packaging.

Safe use

  • use the insert according to the instructions and its intended purpose,
  • do not exceed the lantern’s interior dimensions,
  • do not cover the ventilation openings designed into the construction,
  • do not leave a flame near flammable decorations,
  • let the lantern cool before replacing the insert,
  • follow the rules in force at the cemetery.

The most common mistakes

  • choosing an insert based on the lantern photo,
  • confusing lantern height with its interior height,
  • ignoring insert width and any elements that narrow the interior,
  • buying a “spare” insert that turns out 1 cm too tall.

A simple rule

Pick the lantern first, then check its interior, and only then buy inserts. If you’re still choosing a lantern, start with the guide Which grave lantern to choose?, then compare interior dimensions on the pages of granite lanterns.

Frequently asked questions

Which insert fits a lantern with a 10 cm internal diameter?

An insert with a diameter smaller than 10 cm, leaving room for easy insertion, and with a height matched to the specific model’s internal height. Check both dimensions on the product page.

Is an LED insert better than a traditional one?

It doesn’t soot the interior and has no open flame, but it still must fit the lantern. The choice depends on your preferences and the rules of the cemetery.

Why does the lantern glass darken?

Most often due to sooting from an insert that is too tall or unsuitable, or due to lack of airflow. Choose a lower insert and clean the glass regularly according to the manufacturer’s advice.
