Granite accessories are exposed to rain, frost, sun, dust, pollen and candle wax. Polished granite copes well with these conditions, but regular, gentle care helps a vase, bowl or lantern look new for longer. Remember that accessories often combine several materials: stone, a plastic liner, glass and metal. Each needs a slightly different approach.
Basic rule: clean to suit the material
- granite — water and a mild cleaner designed for natural stone, a soft cloth, then rinse and dry,
- plastic liners — remove, wash in warm water with a mild detergent, rinse,
- grave lantern glass — clean separately so window cleaner does not run onto the stone,
- metal elements — follow the manufacturer’s guidance; avoid abrasive products that can scratch the coating.
Always test any new product first in an inconspicuous spot.
Vase and bowl
Regularly pour away stale water and remove flower residue. This is where deposits and unpleasant odours form fastest. Remove the liner, wash it separately, and wipe the inside of the stone housing with a damp cloth. Wash the outer, polished surface, rinse and dry to avoid streaks. In StoneOnline grave vases and granite bowls the liner is removable, which makes this much easier.
Grave lantern
- Extinguish the refill and wait until the lantern is completely cool.
- Remove the spent refill and clear wax residues without metal tools.
- Clean the glass inside and out.
- Wipe the stone body with a cloth dampened with water and stone cleaner.
- Check that the cap, doors or shields operate correctly.
Do not flood the lantern with water — metal parts and seals dislike prolonged moisture. If the glass darkens quickly with soot, the refill is probably too tall. We explain how to check this in the article How to choose a refill for a grave lantern?
Care calendar
| Pora roku | Co zrobić |
|---|---|
| Spring | thorough wash after winter, remove build-up and leaves, check accessory stability |
| Summer | change water in vases more often, clean out of direct sun |
| Autumn | remove leaves, prepare before 1 November, clean off wax |
| Winter | empty vases and bowls of water, gently remove snow without scraping |
In winter, water left in a vase or bowl can freeze and split the liner. Before frosts, it is worth emptying the vessels, especially if you visit the cemetery less often.
What to avoid?
- rough sponges, scouring pads and abrasive powders,
- one random product for all materials at once,
- mixing chemicals,
- scraping ice and wax with metal tools,
- cleaning in full sun, which leaves streaks.
If you notice cracks, discolouration or loosened fittings, contact the seller or a stonemason.
Frequently asked questions
Can a granite grave vase stay at the cemetery over winter?
Yes. Granite copes well with winter, but before frosts empty the vase and liner of water.
How do I restore shine to a granite grave vase?
Usually a thorough wash, rinse and dry is enough. If the surface is scratched, leave restoration to a stonemason.
What should I use to clean a lantern glass?
A window cleaner or water with a mild detergent, applied to a cloth rather than directly onto the lantern, so the liquid does not run onto the stone.
The simplest plan
Light cleaning during visits, a more thorough wash in spring and autumn, and products matched to each material. The manufacturer’s instructions for your specific model always take priority. See also the guide How to clean a granite headstone?
