A lantern shields the flame from wind and rain, but it is also one of the most visible parts of a headstone. A good choice suits the memorial and is convenient day to day — easy to put the insert in, clean the interior and light the candle. A product photo won’t show how much space the lantern takes on the slab or whether your preferred insert will fit. That’s why it’s worth starting with the numbers.
Measure the available space
Measure where the lantern will stand and leave clearance for handling it. Allow room for the vase, bouquet and any candles. The lantern should not obscure inscriptions or photos. StoneOnline granite lanterns are usually around 18 to 27 cm high with a base of 12×12 or 14×14 cm, depending on the model.
Check the lantern’s interior, not just the outer size
The most common mistake is comparing the insert with the lantern’s total height. The interior space is what matters. On our lantern product pages you’ll find features such as “Internal height”, “Internal diameter” or “Internal base”. Depending on the model, the interior is about 12.5 to 18 cm high, with an internal base of 7×7 or 8×8 cm, or an internal diameter of 7–10 cm. For models supplied with an insert, we also list its dimensions. Read more in our guide How to choose an insert for a grave lantern?
Material and construction
Lanterns can be made entirely of granite or combine stone with glass and metal:
- granite lanterns — a stone body with openings or a pane, visually consistent with a granite headstone,
- lanterns with aluminium elements — e.g. mirror, silver, gold or copper finishes that add a bright, modern accent,
- glass panes and shields — protect the flame; check that they’re easy to clean.
Don’t judge durability by material name or looks alone. On the product page, check what the body, top and shields are made of and how the insert is placed inside.
Match the lantern to the whole memorial
A lantern can echo the colour and form of the grave vase or create a subtle contrast. With an ornate headstone, a simple lantern will tidy the composition; with a pared-back design, a more decorative model can become a clear accent. If you want to be sure the elements match, choose a ready vase and lantern set. You can also place the lantern on a granite base, which raises it above the slab and protects the stone from wax.
Size versus number of lanterns
Many models come in two or more sizes, e.g. TIMELESS or WONDERFUL. On a single grave, one medium-sized lantern is usually enough. On a family grave, you can place two smaller lanterns symmetrically or one larger lantern as a central feature.
Placement and safe use
- use the lantern and insert according to their instructions,
- never leave an open flame near flammable decorations,
- before cleaning, extinguish the insert and wait for the lantern to cool,
- follow the rules in force at the cemetery.
Frequently asked questions
What size lantern for a single grave?
Lanterns around 20–25 cm high are most often chosen. However, compare the dimensions with the slab and the height of the vase to keep the composition proportional.
Will any candle fit a lantern?
No. The insert must fit inside the specific model with some clearance. Check the internal dimensions on the product page before buying inserts.
Granite lantern or with metal elements?
A granite model forms a uniform whole with a stone headstone. Versions with aluminium elements are brighter and more modern. You’ll find both types among our granite lanterns.
Check before you buy
Compare the lantern’s external and internal dimensions, material, opening method and care recommendations. This helps you avoid a situation where the chosen insert doesn’t fit and the lantern takes more space than planned. See granite lanterns for the cemetery.
